04.11.08School of the Day: Tabuk National High School
Just because it’s vacation time in the Philippines doesn’t mean that we cannot feature our first ever school of the day — Tabuk National High School. From the Smart Schools program:
Tabuk National High School, with a total land area of 32,233 sq. meters and is formerly named Kalinga Apayao Provincial High School, is now on its 39th year of advocating quality education to 3,205 enrollees every year. It is located at the heart of Poblacion, Tabuk, Kalinga. The school was founded and headed by Mr. Augusto Alejandrino, a District Supervisor. The school was nationalized on June 1973 with Mrs. Joaquina C. Falgui as the appointed principal followed by Mrs. Purificacion E. Domingo, Mrs. Aurora E. Plan and at present by Dr. Rodolfo C. Ballog. The school has 72 teachers and 20 administrative and support staff. There are 2 building annexes: New Tanglag and Uma Lubuagan which is considered as the center of curricular and co-curricular activities.

03.20.08Peace Shrine Unveiled in Tabuk

A memorial peace shrine built by the Kalinga Peace Makers Movement at the Tabuk Pastoral Center (TPC) here was unveiled on March 15 with Governor Floydelia Diasen and City Mayor Camilo Lammawin Jr. leading the wreath laying at the foot of the marker.
It was dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives in the name of service for the people of Kalinga, particularly the four Catholic priests killed in recent years and those victims of violence.
The inscription at the peace shrine reads: “In memory of Rev. Fathers Conrado Aquino, Elias Bareng, Leo Vande Winkel, all CICM priests and Franciscus Madhu, SVD and all those who sacrificed their lives due to tribal or criminal violence. May the blood they shed be the seed of lasting peace in Kalinga.”

03.11.08Controversy of the Day?
Some people are upset that the winner of the Ms. Laga Gala in Kalinga is part-Kalinga and part-Australian. Mars has the details of the story in his blog as well as in the Ground Report.
Sounds like an awful case of reverse discrimination to me. If the rules state that anyone can join the beauty contest/fashion show, then anyone can join it whether or not s/he is a pureblood, or a half blood, or a mudblood. Surely we are better than Lucius Malfoy and his pureblood nonsense.

03.08.08The Healing Guv
Here’s our next fake magazine cover featuring Cordillera officials. Kalinga Governor Floydelia Diasen is also a nurse by profession (and a college professor to boot) so we are calling her “The Healing Guv”. Who knows, maybe the skills she learned in the health care profession will prove to be useful in healing the political wounds inflicted during the past elections.
Canada based readers, it might interest you to know that Governor Diasen worked as a nurse in Saskatchewan from 1976 to 1978. You can read more professional info on the governor here. And in case you missed our post about her first 100 days in office, you can find it here.

03.05.08Know Your Officials: Kalinga Congressman Manuel Agyao

Know more about the Congressman’s legislative initiatives in his congressional page. He is the vice chair of three committees: National Cultural Communities, Public Works, and Rural Development. To date he has sponsored 14 bills mostly pertaining to the creation of schools or barangays.
Rep. Agyao used to be the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Assistant Secretary for Northern Luzon. He’s one of the very few iCordilleras in government service who reached the Asec (Assistant Secretary) level.

01.22.08Governor Diasen’s First 100 Days
Here’s the report of Kalinga Governor Floydelia Diasen on her first 100 days in office. From the official website of Kalinga province:
The political lane is one less travelled by me before. But because of your overwhelming support it now became an avenue that shall serve as my linkage to you in delivering the reciprocate of the mandate that you have given me.
My being a newbie in the arena has not deterred my strong determination to fulfil the development thrusts especially the PEACE vision I have outlined upon my assumption into office.
Of course the road has been rough and tough considering the complicated situation that I’ve been through right from the start, but against all these odds, and with your usual support, we have been able to start it right rowing towards a common direction that fits our vision for a better Kalinga. With full humility, allow me then to present some highlights on my first 100 days in office.
