08.01.08BSU’s Squash Noodles
Earlier, when we came across news reports that a noodle factory will be built in Benguet to produce vegetable noodles, we wondered how vegetables — particularly the green, leafy ones — can be turned into noodles. Well, the folks at Benguet State University proved that you can make noodles out of squash as you can see in this Inquirer interview with Dr. Violeta Salda of BSU’s Vegetable Processing Center. I suppose this is a good project because it opens a market for squash farmers. -
04.24.08Benguet Cowgirls
Wow. You got to be impressed with these girls. Can you imagine yourself grappling a bull to the ground and tying it up? Our Benguet State University coeds were able to do that during a rodeo contest in Masbate. They made the Inquirer as a result. Congratulations, cowgirls.

MASBATE CITY – At this time of the year, most “colegialas” can be found on the beach, flaunting the latest swimwear and perfecting their tans. Janice Mino and Juanita Palileng of Benguet State University (BSU), however, choose to spend the summer in Masbate’s dusty corrals, wearing denims and wrestling bulls.For three years, Janice and Juanita have been roughing it, along with teammates from the BSU Highland Cowboys and Cowgirls, at the cattle sports events during the Rodeo Masbateño festival in Masbate City. The rodeo is a yearly event to celebrate the island-province’s “cattle country” culture.

04.11.08School of the Day: Tabuk National High School
Just because it’s vacation time in the Philippines doesn’t mean that we cannot feature our first ever school of the day — Tabuk National High School. From the Smart Schools program:
Tabuk National High School, with a total land area of 32,233 sq. meters and is formerly named Kalinga Apayao Provincial High School, is now on its 39th year of advocating quality education to 3,205 enrollees every year. It is located at the heart of Poblacion, Tabuk, Kalinga. The school was founded and headed by Mr. Augusto Alejandrino, a District Supervisor. The school was nationalized on June 1973 with Mrs. Joaquina C. Falgui as the appointed principal followed by Mrs. Purificacion E. Domingo, Mrs. Aurora E. Plan and at present by Dr. Rodolfo C. Ballog. The school has 72 teachers and 20 administrative and support staff. There are 2 building annexes: New Tanglag and Uma Lubuagan which is considered as the center of curricular and co-curricular activities.

03.23.08Gloria Kamaptengan?
Because I am a Gloria hater, oops maybe hate is not the right word, I just dislike her because she cheated her way to the Presidency. So let’s change the H word to something else; besides hating someone is not good for our mental health. Now, because I dislike Gloria, I’m irritated to read this news that a sweet potato variety is being named after her cheating ass.
From GMA News:
A new blight-resistant variety of potato has been named after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in Benguet University, Malacañang disclosed Saturday.The variety, sourced from the Centro Internalionale de la Papa (International Potato Center) in Lima, Peru, was named “Gloria Kamaptengan,” after “mapteng” meaning “good” in Ibaloi and Pangasinan dialects.
“‘Kamaptengan’ means ‘the best of all,’” Rogelio Colting, president of the Benguet State University (BSU) after more than two years of research from 2005-2007, told Mrs Arroyo during her visit to a vegetable trading post in Betag district.
Arroyo was in Betag to see off trucks laden with local vegetable produce bound for the metropolis.
Colting showed her the first-generation tubers of the potato variety, initially codenamed 13.1.1, and said the BSU “would like to name it in your honor.”
A Palace statement said the BSU chose the name “Gloria” because of “her commitment in the development of the agriculture industry in the country.”
The best of all? Huh, Rogelio. I guess the BSU President’s got to do what he’s got to do but I’m kinda hoping that members of the academic community don’t go about acting like politicians trying to please Gloria. You are intellectuals, for Christ’s sakes.
But then again, they are naming a camote variety after Gloria so maybe there’s an inside joke there somewhere. After all, we all know that the song most famously associated with camote goes something like:
“Eat camote, the musical fruit
The more you eat, the more you toot.”Come on, Rogelio, fess up! What’s the real deal in naming this camote after Gloria? To honor her? Or to remind us that Gloria smells like something?
We’re just asking,you know. No offense meant. No offense intended.
UPDATE: My bad, we didn’t read the news carefully or our dislike for Gloria has clouded our vision such that we misread the story. They’re actually naming a potato, not a sweet potato, after Gloria. So maybe there’s no inside joke as we hoped there was. My apologies, folks.

03.16.08March O8 Criminology Exam Results: UC/BCF Rules
Cordillera based schools particularly UC/BCF just keep on rolling when it comes to criminology licensure exams. Congratulations to our kailiyans who made it to the top ten as well as to those who passed. You can find the list of board passers here.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - The University of the Cordilleras (UC) topped the nationwide criminology licensure examination this year, keeping to itself the top licensure spot for the past 23 years.Data from the Professional Regulatory Commission released on Thursday shows that UC graduate Marlon Lagadan Caltino ranked first after garnering a rating of 89.35 percent in the exams.
Caltino led 927 successful candidates out of a total of 3,318 examinees nationwide - a measly national passing rate of 27.9 percent.
Caltino’s four other schoolmates also placed in the top ten of the March 2008 Criminologist Licensure Examinations. Out of the 82 examinees from UC, 75 passed representing a 91 percent performance rate.
Other UC graduates who share the limelight with Caltino are Jesson George Rafael Domogen, 3rd Place with 87.70% rating; Ronald Clemente Abuan, 7th Place with 86.20% rating; Denver Junior Santiago Agustin, 8th Place with 85.85% rating; and Faith Bomowey Bangcawayan, 9th Place with 85.65% rating.

03.05.08Recto of the North?
Is Baguio the educational center of the north? Maybe. Lately though, it seems like it’s developing a reputation as the place where Koreans can get a quickie diploma. Last November, for instance, the Koreatimes reported this:
Twenty-three incumbent and former military officers and officer cadets were caught for having used fake university diplomas during their application for officer training, a lawmaker said Friday.
According to Rep, Song Young-sun of the Grand National Party, the Ministry of Defense recently withdrew its appointment of 13 incumbent and two former officers for allegedly fabricating diplomas from A.T. College in Baguio, the Philippines, to submit to the ministry for verification of their academic record.
